Abstract

The promise of discourse analysis is that it allows for not only capturing political discourse, but also presents a perspective to produce novel interpretations of politics. Some of the issues discourse analysis directs our attention towards include questions of political identity, social and political cleavages, the constructions of political hegemonies, political framing and agenda-setting, and the role of media discourse in politics. This research seminar discusses hands-on approaches to capture discourse empirically using different empirical material and research techniques including content analysis (also computer assisted content analysis) and visual discourse analysis. To illustrate the practices of different research techniques to capture political discourse, Kennet Lynggaard will draw on his own research on financial sector, environmental and agricultural policy discourses.

This is the first research seminar in the series on discourse analysis that the Urban Development and Mobility department at LISER is organizing as part of a collective interest in developing qualitative and mixed methods approaches at LISER. This initiative of UDM contributes to the centre of competences in Experimental and Participatory Research. The four scholars invited are working in the field of political science, land change science or linguistics and are recognized experts in discourse or content analysis. They will present different facets of these methodologies and show how they can be used to address issues of interest to researchers at UDM and LISER.
