Conference: Inequality and Fairness of Political Reforms

LISER presents paper ‘Preferences for redistribution and exposure to tax-benefit schemes in Europe’

LISER presents paper ‘Preferences for redistribution and exposure to tax-benefit schemes in Europe’.

Dr. Javier Olivera presented the paper ‘Preferences for redistribution and exposure to tax-benefit schemes in Europe’ co-authored with Dr. Francesco Andreoli, at the ‘Conference Inequality and Fairness of Political Reforms’ on December 8-9 held at the University of Mannheim.

The goal of this paper is to assess how preferences for redistribution are associated with the tax and benefit schemes experienced by the individuals of 22 European countries during the period 2008-2012. Different from previous research, the exposure to the tax-benefit scheme is captured at the individual level on the basis of micro-data from the European Social Survey and the EU-SILC survey. The main finding is that a positive exposure to redistribution increases the demand for redistribution, although the effect is substantially mitigated by the extent of market income inequality.

The conference was hosted at the Collaborative Research Center (SFB 884) "Political Economy of Reforms" at the University of Mannheim brings together scholars interested in inequality and fairness issues across the disciplines economics, political science, sociology and statistics.
