MathemaTIC Awarded the Best Use of Formative Assessment

LISER as a research partner in the project

The Luxembourg Ministry of Education together with other national and international partners (below) have received two awards in the last six months for its MathemaTIC project.

The first award was the Best Use of Formative Assessment which was won during the 2018 e-Assessment Awards Ceremony in London, UK. This highly sought-after recognition was awarded to MathemaTIC for its unique approach to formative assessments and its implementation in primary schools across Luxembourg.

MathemaTIC also won a second award in August 2018 – this time it clinched the gold award from the Brandon Hall Excellence in Learning Group in the category Best Advance in Custom Content, for the successful implementation and progress aimed at raising attainment and reducing the equity gap at school in Luxembourg.

LISER has contributed since 2015 to MathemaTIC via the participation of Dr. Catalina Lomos in the core evaluation team. The main evaluation question that the project aims to answer is short-term focused on the process of integrating MathemaTIC in the teaching and learning practice and long-term on its impacts on specific outcomes.

The success of MathemaTIC as an individualised learning platform can be attributed to its highly engaging diagnostic and summative assessments, and dynamic multi-lingual capability. Additionally, MathemaTIC leverages a powerful monitoring system which provides rich data to teachers, allowing for effective and early learning interventions.

The simulations, exercises and interactive game-inspired tasks within MathemaTIC allow students to connect abstract math concepts to more practical applications. It builds their confidence in mathematics by making computations tangible in an engaging and intuitive way. MathemaTIC also provides the flexibility of being used in class or at home, on multiple mobile devices and in four different languages.

Established as a project to innovative math education for every learner, MathemaTIC continues to show the importance of transforming education using immersive technology solutions in order to reduce the equity gap across the country.

Other national associated successful initiatives that emerged using the MathemaTIC platform are the “Mental Math Competition and the “Making Fractions Fun for Students in Grade 7”, which successfully engaged students across Luxembourg.

Future plans include building MathemaTIC items for Grade 9 students so that students from Grades 3-9 will be in the long-term able to learn Mathematics in a fun and stimulating environment.
