Research summary

Karolina is a landscape architect and a GIS specialist focusing on remote sensing and 3-D LiDAR technology. She obtained Ph.D. in urban forestry at the Faculty of Forestry University of Agriculture in Krakow.

Karolina studied landscape architecture (bachelor to master's) at the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Surveying at the University of Agriculture in Krakow. Then, she graduated with Post-Diploma Studies in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Airborne and Terrestrial Laser Scanning at AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. Karolina received a scientific scholarship from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economics at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Vienna in the Institute of Landscape Development, Recreation and Conservation Planning. She completed her Ph.D. thesis at the Faculty of the Forestry University of Agriculture in Krakow, referring to methods of urban forests and landscape monitoring using geo-information technology.

Karolina's interests relate to the urban environment, including the definition of landscape metrics and 3-D structure of urban form and ecosystem services provided by trees in aspects of urban green management, forest health monitoring, and analyzing the dynamics of cityscape changes. At LISER, Karolina works on change detection in land consumption for housing in Luxembourg within a spatial dimension using GIS analysis (Housing Observatory project).

Karolina participated in several interdisciplinary projects ("iTre-es" projects funded by NCN in Poland in collaboration with the Faculty of Sociology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan; project "GeoCentre of Excellence" with Faculty of Geographical and Geological Sciences Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan; commissioned research for State Forests and National Parks in Poland; "SusDens" project founded by FRS-FNRS-FNR in Luxembourg) and obtained several scholarships during Ph.D. studies.
