Daily mobility: between choice of transport mode, high pressure rhythm and satisfaction

LISER researcher Philippe Gerber has published two articles that examine the impact of commuting on relationships, consumption and family life

Mobility is one of the flagship areas studied within the Urban Development and Mobility Department at LISER. It is also a top priority for the Luxembourg government. Dr. Philippe Gerber, researcher at LISER, has co-authored two scientific articles addressing the theme of mobility through the angles of the transport mode choice, its satisfaction, as well as the rhythm of life that this activity and others might impose to families.

In the first paper1Dealing with daily rhythms: Families' strategies to tackle chronic time pressure” co-authored by Guillaume Drevon, Philippe Gerber and Vincent Kaufmann, the authors analyse the results of a survey done of 20 families, that include some long-distance commuters. The aim in to understand the effects of life acceleration on family life management and other professional, leisure, and consumption activities.
Indeed, going to work every day can be stressful either individually or for the whole family. Our choice of transport mode or our attitudes affect our daily well-being, and the outcome of these choices is even more important when it comes to the long round journeys we have to make day after day.

In the second paper2Links between Attitudes, Mode Choice, and Travel Satisfaction: A Cross-Border Long-Commute Case Study” co-authored by Philippe Gerber, Marius Thériault, Christophe Enaux and Samuel Carpentier-Postel, the authors study the impact of long journeys to work generated by cross-border job market.
More precisely, the publication studies the impact of long journeys to work on well-being were analysed by examining the relationships between mode choice, transport-related attitudes, socio-demographic and spatial attributes, and the level of satisfaction in the context of cross-border long commutes to Luxembourg.
