In this seminar Chris will speak about his interdisciplinary journey in the field of food environment research, which he has been pursuing for over a decade. His talk will start by introducing key concepts and frameworks for food environment research, including how his work has contributed to the theoretical development of the field. He will then build from these theoretical concepts to explain how they have informed his approach to the use of participatory visual methods, such as Photovoice and participatory mapping, designed to capture qualitative lived experiences of food environments. Chris will give examples from his work across diverse geographical contexts – including projects in sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia, and the UK.

Christopher Turner
Chris is a human geographer with interdisciplinary expertise in food systems, epidemiology and public health nutrition. His research focuses on the role that food environments play in shaping diets, nutrition, and health around the world – particularly in low- and middle-income countries. His work, including the Turner et al., (2018) food environment conceptual framework, has informed the global food environment research agenda, as well as teaching, policy and practice. His empirical research features mixed method approaches such as participatory mapping and photography to capture lived experiences of food environments, with a view to co-designing public health policies for improved diets, nutrition, and health. Chris works at the Natural Resources Institute, University of Greenwich (UK), where he leads the Food Systems & Nutrition Research Group in the Centre for Food Systems Research. He also co-manages the UK Food Systems Centre for Doctoral Training (UKFS-CDT). Externally, he leads the Agriculture, Nutrition and Health Academy - Food Environment Working Group, under the Innovative Methods and Metrics for Agriculture and Nutrition Actions (IMMANA) programme.
