Enhancing Cognitive and Emotional Health in Older Immigrants: Results from a Randomized Clinical Trial
Aging is often accompanied by increased vulnerability in both cognitive and emotional domains, particularly among individuals exposed to chronic stress, socioeconomic disadvantage, and limited access to resources - conditions frequently experienced by immigrant populations. Lifestyle based interventions, such as mindfulness training and multidomain health promotion programs, have gained attention as promising strategies to support cognitive and emotional health. Yet, these approaches remain largely untested in vulnerable populations, such as older immigrants. In this session, I will present MEDITAGING, a randomized, double blind clinical trial comparing an 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program with a Health Promotion Program among older immigrants in Luxembourg. The study integrates cognitive, physiological, and affective measures assessed at baseline, post intervention, and follow up. The session will explore the main results of the trial, highlighting the cognitive and emotional outcomes observed across both interventions, as well as the challenges and practical considerations involved in implementing such programs in a real-world community setting.
