Evolution of the total resident population of Luxembourg (1971-2021)

Evolution, by canton, of the share of young people (<15) and of elderly people (65+) between 1947 and 2011 (census data)

Ageing of the population varies by canton

Total resident population of Luxembourg from 1905 to 2011 (according to age, gender and nationality – census data)

07-17-2015

Increasing numbers of foreign residents

The population of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg doubled between 1905 and 2011. This demographic growth was primarily caused by an influx of foreign nationals. By January 1st, 2015, 46% of the country’s total population consisted of non-Luxembourgers.

Ageing of total resident population of Luxembourg between 1871 and 2011 (census data)

07-31-2014

Inevitable ageing of the population of Luxembourg

Increasing life expectancy combined with a gradual fall in birth and fertility rates are causing an overall ageing of the population in Luxembourg. A comparison between the country’s age pyramids for 1871 and 2011 bears witness  to a significant change in its age structure.

Evolution, by canton, of the demographic dependency ratio between 1947 and 2011 (census data)

07-31-2014

From 1947 to 2011, the proportion of non-working population rose from 41 non-working individuals to 46, per 100 people of working age.
